Join thousands of runners from around the world in Australia’s largest and most prestigious Half Marathon event. The iconic course takes participants past the beautiful sights of Sydney’s harbour side and is open to both individual or team relay entries. 

The relay event splits the 21.1km between two runners. Runner one will complete the first 7km, finishing in Metcalfe Park where Runner two will be waiting to begin the final 14.1km.

The Sydney Morning Herald Half Marathon presented by Qantas Assure will commence at 6:45am on Sunday, May 21, 2017.

Elite Wheelchair Sprint
Elite Wheelchair Athletes – This Start Group is for elite wheelchair athletes only. Athletes must be in a racing chair to compete in this Start Group and will aim to complete the course sub 10mins. Please note, for planning and health and safety, elite wheelchair athletes must be entered into the event prior to 5:00pm Tuesday, May 9, 2017.
The SMH Half Marathon Seeded - This Start Group is for athletes who aim to gain a place in the top 30 (by invitation only). Pre-qualification is required for this start group.
Preferred - This Start Group is for athletes who will complete the course in a qualifying time of sub 85mins (men) and sub 95mins (women). Pre-qualification is required for this start group.
Blue Start - This Start Group is for athletes who will complete the course in a qualifying time of sub 105mins. Pre-qualification is required for this start group.
Orange Start - This Start Group is for athletes who will complete the course in a qualifying time of sub 120mins. Pre-qualification is required for this start group.
Green Start - This Start Group is for participants who aim to complete the course sub 140mins. There is no qualifying time required for this start group.
Yellow Start - This Start Group is for participants who aim to complete the course sub 160mins. There is no qualifying time required for this start group.
The SMH Half Marathon - Relay Preferred- This Start Group is for relay teams who will complete the course in a qualifying time of sub 90mins. Pre-qualification is required for this start group. This year, Runner 1 of the relay team will leave at the same time as the Preferred Start from a new relay specific start area on St James Road.
Purple Start - This Start Group is for general entry into the relay event. This year, Runner 1 of the relay team will leave at the same time as the Green Start from a new relay specific start area on St James Road.

No strollers, pushed wheelchairs, pets, bicycles, scooters, hand cycles, skateboards or roller blades are permitted in any group. 

Can I enter a Pre-Qualifying Start Group?

If you have competed in a race listed on the Qualifying Times page below and you meet the required time, you will automatically qualify and a pre-qualifying start group will be available for selection during registration. If you have not competed in a previous event listed on the Qualifying Times page, please fill out the Pre-Qualification Form below prior to entering. We accept times from any official race, anywhere in the world, within the last two years and 10km or over in distance.

We ask that you please allow 2 business days for your request to be processed and await confirmation from our team prior to registering. Please do not enter into the event prior to being contacted as start groups cannot be changed once your registration is complete.

Elite Wheelchair Athlete Pre-Qualification

If you have competed in a Fairfax event in the last two years you will automatically qualify for the race and the start group will be available for selection during registration. If you have not competed in a previous Fairfax event, please fill out the Pre-Qualification Form below prior to entering with previous results.

To qualify you must be able to submit a race result of sub 4mins for 1500m from the past two years. We ask that you please allow 2 business days for your request to be processed and await confirmation from our team prior to registering.

*The first 1,000 Qantas Assure App users who enter the Sydney Morning Herald Half Marathon presented by Qantas Assure online and enter their Qantas Frequent Flyer number at registration between 10:00am (AEDT) 7 February and 11.59pm 21 March 2017 will have 1,000 Qantas Points credited to their member account by 2 July 2017. Qantas reserves the right to withdraw or extend this offer at any time.

^The Qantas Assure App is offered by Qantas and you must be a member of the Qantas Frequent Flyer program and 13 years of age or over to use the App. During the Qantas Assure Wellness Rewards 28-Day Trial, App users will earn Qantas Points without having to purchase an Eligible Qantas Assure Product. Qantas Points earned during this trial will be credited to your Qantas Frequent Flyer account on a fortnightly basis. Eligible Qantas Assure Products are Qantas Assure Health Insurance Policies and Qantas Assure Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance Policy. Once the 28-Day Trial has ended, Qantas Frequent Flyer members who do not purchase an Eligible Qantas Assure Product will accumulate Locked Qantas Points by completing activities through the App. Locked Qantas Points will expire 12 months after the member last accumulated a Locked Qantas Point. Up to 3,000 Locked Qantas Points can be converted to Qantas Points following purchase of an Eligible Qantas Assure Product. Qantas reserves the right to extend or withdraw this trial at anytime.
